bitter carrots

My carrots are so bitter! They're also a light orange color instead of the deep orange color at the supermarket. They're ready for picking, but I can't stand to eat them. Is there a way to make them not bitter? If I add lime at this stage, will it help?

Some varieties of carrots are naturally bitter but, I think it is the purple carrots that are bitter and not the yellow varieties. Maybe just leave them in the soil for a bit longer so that the leaves can create and deposit more sugar into the roots.
