Corn growing tassels and corn

Today I noticed that one of my corn stalks are growing tassels on a sideshoot.... And an ear of corn.

But, that wouldn't concern me.... but they're growing out of the SAME PLACE! Is that normal? Instead of seeing silks growing out of an ear of corn, and that ear being covered up by leaves, I am seeing tassels with an ear of corn growing in the middle of it, with no leaves covering it.

No, its not normal, but the wild relatives of corn had seeds where the tassels are, and the ears are an unatural thing in themselves so corn can get confused and do flip flops with its past lives pretty easily

Perhaps pull up the tassels around the ear and then wrap something around it to protect it?
