Asparagus has male and female plants. No berries on the males.

Some cultivars like the Jersey Knight, they only sell the male plants. They are supposed to make thicker spears. I don't know about Mary Washington. But even if it is female plants, it seems a little early in the season for the berries to appear.

I have four plantings of asparagus, from 14 years old to some just planted this year, and all of them have berries except the Jersey Knight which is indeed all male. Consider yourself lucky if you have no berries yet on your Mary Washingtons. The males don't waste energy producing a berry, and do grow fatter stalks.
