why are wasps swarming around my lettuce plants

I'm really a very novice gardener but I am finally trying to grow some things and this past weekend I planted some lettuce plants...(not from seeds but actual little plants from the nursery).

Anyway, I am wondering if it's too hot anyway to be growing them; maybe I should shade them--they get about 2 hours of full sun a day and then are mostly shaded.

Anyway, I get home from work today and there are like 6 or 7 wasps swarming around and crawling all over my lettuce plants...

Help? I'm not super happy about the wasps...

Hi Itdesign,

Sounds like your lettuce will have enough shade. Wasps are actually predators of other pests in the garden and they may be looking for a meal. Look over your plants carefully either late in the evening or early in the morning when the wasps aren't active. Look for any type of caterpillar. Look inside the leaves and under them as well.
