I believe you are looking at a Gypsy Moth. You should report it to the propper department and destroy.

Double check first :)

Nope not a gypsy moth, although it definitely looks like a moth caterpillar to me.

That interesting though, I've definitely seen both gypsy moths & gypsy moth caterpillars before & had no idea they were bad :?.

Someone else found it for me :)

It's a white satin moth!

Yes, but he isn't after my veggies - just our poplar, which is quite well established & can stand up to them. I actually went to grab a leaf off the poplar & found another caterpillar! :O

I don't know if I should do anything about him or not since they are an invasive species but don't seem to be a huge problem. They are probably the reason why the Robin pair have been so happily hopping around my garden! :D

You know what? That's the one thing I've yet to find in my garden is a caterpillar ::?:. If I do find one, it will probably be of the standard red and black variety. Any idea if these are friend or foe (just figured I'd ask since there seems to be a few caterpillar-knowledgeable folks in this thread).

The most common around here is the Wooly Bear Caterpillar. Tiger Moth

The heavier the fur the colder the winter. :D

I love wolly bears, they are so cute! :)

I've been finding more grubs than anything this year. I'm just glad we don't have tent caterpillars *shiver*

https://www.discoverlife.org/ has some good butterfly/caterpillar ID.

looks like we both got the spelling wrong. Woolly Bear.

double "O" double "L"

We have the nasty Tent caterpillars. :x Mostly in the Alder trees. I have found a few tents in the Orchard.
