Tomato plant question - Base stems?

I have about 8 tomato plants and they all have very low (and some pretty thick) branches very close to the bottom near the dirt. Should I cut them away? What damage, if any, will that do???

I remove them from my plants and I also remove the suckers. The lower leaf removal may help to keep soil from splashing up onto the leaves. Slowing down the spread of diseases. A thick layer of mulch helps here also.
