OK, time to play guess that bug. Winner gets...well the satisfaction of winning
I live in upstate SC and have seen these little guys mostly on my summer squash and a little on my cucumber plants. They don't seem to interested in my pepper or tomato plants. I'm container gardening and my yellow squash and cucumbers trail onto the ground and into the container where my round zucchini (bush type) lives. But my pepper and tomatoes are a little more isolated in their containers, with nothing trailing into them or onto the ground. So I'm not sure if it's their nature or a matter of logistics.

I'm thinking some kind of assassin bug? In which case, my understanding is they are a beneficial critter. Correct?
If not, what the heck are they and are then beneficial or should I try and clear them out?

It's a squashbug. Spray the plants with the nozzle of your garden hose set on "shower", then wait....the bugs will come to the top of the plant to dry off, then simply grab each one and drop it into a container of soapy water. Also, inspect the undersides of all leaves for clusters of brownish/orangish eggs - and put them in there too. The eggs will look like this.....

You're welcome. Those things can really get out of hand quick, if ya let 'em. Just be thankful you don't have pumpkins, because they REALLY like getting on them.
Here's how I deal with them, as shown in a video I shot last year...
