Broccoli

hey, me again, I am going to try Broccoli also this year and I can get the plants already grown (3 or so inches high). I live in NW NJ and the garden gets lots of sun. Anything I should know about or do? I only planted Broccoli once when I was a kid and we didn't get any broccoli, just huge plants that flowered.. Not sure what went wrong then but I don't want a repeat.

I would plant them where they would get noon shade OR mid-afternoon on shade. This way, they won't bolt (flower) as quickly. Our short spring is a killer when trying to grow brassicas. You should be able to plant them now.

Yeah broccoli are cold weather crops. I planted my seeds indoors mid Jan and transplanted them outdoors, mid March. They are making heads now. If you start them too late, once it is getting hot they tend to go straight to flowers without setting heads.

put mulch around them, this keeps the heat off their roots. Also make sure you water them practically every other day if you haven't got any showers.
