The snow is finallly off. Also; About My Garden

The snow is finally off my gardenplot. I had 2 large potatoes left and they were growing sprouts, so I decided to go plant them. I don't usually plant this early, but they needed to be planted. I will see how they do.

I will tell you a little about my garden and gardening style. I garden in the soil that was on my lot, heavily amended with organic matter. I add organic matrter in the fall and till it in. Here is a pic of it now.

This plot is 50 x 150 feet. On the right you can see my strawberry and raspberry bed.

I like to give things space to grow. No crowding things up. I don't use trellises nor stakes except for pole beans. I plant most things from seed directly in the garden. Tomatoes and peppers I get nursery plants.

Here is a couple pics from August.

It's beautiful! And to be able to look up from working in the garden and see that view!
My little 10x15 garden and I are jealous...

Very nice garden you have. My garden is 200 square feet. But I am not that jealous - it is a lot of work to take care of this size garden.

Thanks for sharing Jal - I never get tired of your photo posts.

Question on the potater planting - You just put it in there and cover it up? Thats it? Don't people usually cut the potato into pieces circling the bud growth?

With potatoes, it's kind of to each his own. Some people cut them into chucks with one eye to a piece, some with two to three eyes to a piece, and others finally just plant the whole thing.

I haven't heard any reports as to one method compared with the other, but I've heard they all will produce potatoes.

Yep! garden5 has it right.

I had these two large spuds and it is really too early to plant potatoes, but I wanted to plant them before the sprouts got much longer. So I just put them in a hole and covered them up. I am sure they will come up then get frozen. Even if they do , they will come again.

If you are buying certified potato seed potatoes, you would probably want to cut them to one or two eyes per piece to make your $ go farther. I like to cut them with two eyes per piece.
