Potato mystery

Hello, I'm hoping someone out there can help me out! I've been searching all I can about our potatoes, and I can't find anything.

Last year's harvest has many little oblong brown/black things in them, and for the life of me I can't figure out what it is. I'm hoping someone here will have seen this before!

It appears to be wireworm damage. The adult is a small beetle. Google wireworm.

Yup!
Wireworm was my guess too.
I haven't been affected with it, but a neighbor came to me with the same thing and I looked it up.

My first thought was a worm as well, but there are no visible entrance holes. Searching for wireworms it would seem that they are quite a bit larger? The 2nd picture is a closeup of the tiny little chunk that you can see missing on the right side of the first. The oblong shapes start and stop inside the potato, with no tunnels. I excavated one and it almost seems like plant material. Our potatoes suffer from scab, but from what I've read that is superficial, where as these marks appear throughout.

** EDIT **

I will check with the gardener (hi mom), see if she saw the click beetles in there last year.
