oh on topic of renting a tiller
Craigslist can be your best friend when it comes time for tilling. I know that in my area alone, there are always at least a dozen or so ads for tilling services offered
We've had lots of discussions here about "To Till or Not to Till." I leave it to those gardeners who have enough space to actually consider the question, to make that decision.
By dint of creativity and deciding that a raised bed 2.5' x 8' in the middle of my roses was OK for veggies, I've brought a grand total of 96 square feet into cultivation.
No tilling here!
And, of course, as with any home service, be sure you get references before hiring anyone. In the Bay Area, several small-time (and a few big-time) criminal groups have operated via Craigslist: the first, honest-appearing person cases the joint; later, the others do the dirty deed, whichever it happens to be for that particular group (car theft? burglary? etc.).
So just make sure that someone who appears legit really *is* legit.
Happy gardening!
