Vegetables that will survive the winter?

I live in Austin, TX, so we don't get too many freezes during the winter. Are there any vegetables that I can plant now that will survive the winter? I started my first garden last spring and most of the things died due to the drought, but I still have the area and would like to keep using it.

I've read that onions can survive the winter. When is the best time for me to plant them?

you can be planting cool weather crops now--lettuce, spinach, peas, carrots, broccoli, swiss chard, onions, garlic, cabbage, kale, etc. All of those should pretty much make it through the winter where you are, I would think.
