Companion crops?

I have a fairly basic knowledge of some of the plants you shouldn't place near to each other becuase they will kill or cross-pollenate. I was hoping perhaps someone might be able to expand a little bit? I have been doing some googling but I'm not coming up with a really good comprehensive list so far.

So - what things have you noticed do really well together? What to avoid?

Yes, a book on the same topic would be a good idea. I have used these charts for years, but, I'm thinking of acquiring a book on companion planting.

Incidentally if you haven't already read this book: Gaia's Garden by John Hemnway it is an excellant read.

I just looked at the companion crop chart, and next to cucumbers, it lists "no strong herbs", but I have inter-planted dill among my cucumbers to wonderful results. And as a bonus, the whole area smells like dill pickles! Another wonderful book that covers companion crops is the Vegetable Gardener's Bible.
