Those very large onions are the variety Big Daddy. I planted plants in April. The smaller onions are Yellow Spanish. I planted sets in April.

Have you ever planted them from seeds? I want to do it in the spring.

Yes. I have some that I planted from seed this spring. I haven't harvested those yet. They will not be as large as those that I planted from sets or plants. I like to use the seedlings for green onions when about the size of a pencil. If let to grow, they will make small dry onions. When I harvest those I will have to take a picture.

I plant seed onions early in April here. They could possibly be planted a bit earlier. Onions are pretty frost resistant.

You should also plant a couple of large onions and let them bloom and go to seed, then gather the seed.

Gary, If I can recommend anything on onion culture it would be: Plant early in the spring. Give each plant 5 to 6 inches of space. Fertilize them. Weed them. Provide ample water. Plant sets (little dry onions) that are about the size of marbles, or if you can get them plants are good. If you are in the North, plant long day onions.

jal_ut.. You mentiond long day onions if you live in the north. I live in northern Ohio. What would you suggest? Last year I grew Walla, candy, and spanish onion. None got too big. Should I try another type?

My picture server seems to be on vacation. Sorry.

pepper4, the spanish onions should work. Perhaps some red ones.
Walla Walls may be a bit iffy like it is here. See my recommendations back two posts. Good luck.
