Hey anyone have a favorite online seed company? I'm looking for best value. I need to buy some lettuce ane spinach seeds...

Generous portions, good variety, combined shipping and fast shipping! So far - great germination rate from all of his seeds (latest were his "German Giant" and "French Breakfast" radishes and Cilantro)

Otherwise, your local Walmart may still have $1.00 seed packets left (ours does), not a huge variety, but plenty of cabbage, lettuce, spinach and such...

There is already an existing post on quality suppliers that offer seed. Parkseed.com offers free shipping if you search for a coupon code. But seed is cheap as it is; I would be more focused on quality than saving two dollars. Walmart does not have quality seed.

While I agree with you on other sources for Tomatoes, and possibly other veggies, I respectfully disagree with you on the quality of seeds from Walmart when it comes to the basics, such as herbs, lettuce and such. All those seeds are either Ferry Morse or Burbee's.

All of my pepper plants are grown from those seeds, all of the herbs and tomatillos and all early season radishes and carrots (were) with nearly 100% germination rate.

Good quality seeds for all basic and widely known varieties (if that is what one is after)

Each unto his own, but I'm going to stick with a local nursery or quality online supplier for my seed. I'd rather purchase from these places knowing that this is the business they are focused on. Walmart has too many other things to worry about than the quality of their mass marketed seed. Anything mass marketed is too ordinary anyway. I'm looking for organic options, heirloom strains, exotic varieties and superior quality. This can only be found from a company with their heart in the business. If your not interested in any of this and you want plain lettuce and ordinary spinach, rather than tasty, certified organic Buttercrunch Lettuce or Monnopa Spinach, then you might be satisfied with buying seed from Walmart. Both of the sources you referenced only supply a fraction of their seed to Walmart, and it's usually the most basic seed. I understand the convenience of heading to Walmart and picking up seed for $1, but there are many other disadvantages with this option.

Don't hate passionatecook, I just planted a bunch of stuff from Lowe's which is Burpee's and Ferry-Morse with great results. Sure they don't have the exotics but the have the basic and that what most peoples garden consist of.

I will be ordering some stuff for this spring but I will more than likely get the basics as mentioned above. I am the one that started tho other thread of where to get seed from, only cause I was looking for more variety, but the old stand by has done me great for 10 years or more.

The point I was trying to make is that you shouldn't worry about things like best value because most seeds are cheap and similiarly priced. If you're wondering what is the best convenience, then yes, walmart, lowe's and home depot might suit you because they have standing stores throughout the country. Although many online suppliers offer free shipping, no tax and cheap pricing structures for their seed, not to mention better quality. In the end, convenience is won for me with these guys since I don't have to get in my car and go to the store to be disappointed by the lack of variety and then also pay tax.

I've noticed that most gardeners on this forum are interested in organic, heirloom and variety in their seed choices... I don't think I'm the only one. "Exotics" doesn't have to be vegetable strains and herbs you have never heard of before... most people have heard of small-fruited yellow pear tomatoes and purple basil, but these seeds are not usually found in supermarkets or mass market stores. These two seed options cost the same if not pennies more than standard cherry tomatoes and genovese basil, and they aren't really that exotic in the wide array of seed available to us!

I use Pinetree Seeds when I want smaller quantities of seeds. They charge less per packet, but you get fewer seeds. Downstairs, in my basement, I have a large grocery sack filled with half-packets of seeds. Next year I am vowing not to buy one single seed. It will be a legume year, and I've got tons of different bean and pea seeds downstairs, all half-packets or less

After going through ALL the sites on my post I came up with these. They were the cheaper, easier to navigate, had wide varied selection.
Some of the other sites were just not for me. Some were VERY expensive some wouldn't sell less than 500 seed packets, not so good for the home gardener in most cases. .

Maybe this will make it easier for you and others. I haven't nailed it down my fav's yet but some had things others didn't I have till next spring to figure all that out.

If you're only feeding yourself, you don't need a lot of plants. Your best value would be to request seeds for postage. For less that $0.60 I guarantee you someone would be happy to share extra seeds with you that would be plenty. A great source is the GardenWeb Seed Exchange, many members offer seeds for a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope. I use to offer seeds all the time. I could give away 15 varieties of seeds for under $0.80 postage.

The trick is to really do your comparison shopping. Nat is right though - seed exchanges will probably be best for you .

I think in the states I found Stocks to be the cheapest. I went with Veseys because they are Canadian (thus CND funds & cheaper shipping) because they were both cheapest & offered the best selection.

However in all my research I also found an amazing little seed shop that does all organic (mostly just pesticide free, but some certified) and carries these amazing heirloom varieties & they are 20 minutes off my drive up to my cottage . I didn't get my bulk order from them because they didn't have enough of the varieties I wanted, but I'm hoping to get a small package from them in the spring (as if I don't have enough to plant already...). It's Terra Edibles if anyone is interested. So look locally!

I definitely think it's worth looking into Seed Savers - they have some really neat varieties!! I will probably get some from them in future years, but found their shipping too confusing! However, a friend of mine did order from them & was very pleased with his new pepper seeds.
