Garden playing tricks on me.

So in a nutshell, what happened was that I started some lovely pumpkins indoors, nurtured them, planted my them in my garden up on little hills at the beginning of summer... then the dogs ran them over. So I re-seeded outdoors, waited 2 weeks, NOTHING. Got really mad and threw all my pumpkin/watermelon/squash seeds INTO the garden .

So when something came up a month later (very cool/wet spring/summer) I was ecstatic! We had no idea what it was going to be but after asking you guys I decided they were all pumpkins and my squash & watermelon were dead.

A week or so ago our first "pumpkin" started growing, we went away for this last weekend and when I went to check on it with hubby the first thing he said was "I don't think that's a pumpkin". No, it doesn't look like it is...

It was quite round until this weekend, and some pumpkins grow quite long; so maybe it is a pumpkin, or maybe it is butternut.

You'll notice we have several squash-somethings growing in the garden & they all seem to have very similar, but different leaf structures. One is a more defined maple-like shape then the other, and the same one has sharper edges where the other is a little ruffled.

Does anyone know what anything is????

(and yes, everything is looking a little overgrown, I need to pull the dill & save the seeds & the lettuce is going to pop any day now, I'm so excited that worked!!!)

The first thing I thought was watermelon. It's not a butternut. Their leaves look just like cuke leaves only much larger.
How big is it?

Oh boy! *head desk*

It's about the size of a basketball (obviously a different shape) it's just exploded!!!

The best part is we're going away next week so I have no idea what I'll be coming home to!

I do hope it's a pumpkin, but some squash would be really nice.

Any thoughts on the plants that look the same but not exactly? I did have a few varieties of pumpkin.

Next year I'm not going to get so frustrated so quickly!! and get some labels...
