One stalk dieing, one living

When I bought my tomato it somehow came with two stalks coming from the same root. I couldn't serpeate them. They appear to be connected at the very bottom in the root.

So, I planted it that way and it grew about 3 feet.

Now one stalk is completely green and lively, the other stalk is brown and all the leaves wilting. Why?

Should I just cut the dieing stalk at ground level?
Can I plant it seperate and hope roots will grow?

I would just cut off the dying one. To untangle the roots might hurt the good part of the plant.
