Tips on sunflowers

Wasn't sure where to put this post so I put it here. My boss wants to plant the big sunflowers, the one that get about 8" or more across. As well as a plant that produces edible seed like you might find in a bag the grocery store.

I live around St. Louis area in Mo. Any suggestion a good disease drought resistant strain that has some tasty seed?

Thanks Dono

Think manure. Heavy on the manure.

Horse manure in sawdust, as thick as you can get it in the fall. Till it in.
Plant straight into that in the spring.

Don't know all the varieties.....but the grey stripe grows huge flowers.
A friend's get 18" across. And stalks as thick as my fore arm and over 12 feet tall.
I bring him the manure, he shares the seeds with me.

I am down with the horse manure thing. I have a place close that gives it away. I just wanted a little bit this year, they were kinda disappointed they really wanted to fill my truck up I guess to get rid of it. :P

This grey strip is that the name of the plant or just what 'you' call it?

They will max around 14 feet if conditions are right.

Mine only get to 6-10 feet, but I don't put 2 feet of horse manure on in the fall(2-6 inches some years).

Look for horse manure with saw dust

Good gardening

22' O my that is one big 'ol sunflower.

Where I go the manure is mixed with the bedding which is saw dust, tiny wood chips. That way you are adding two kinds of browns. Get it brown?

No, really not sure if manure is a brown or green or "other". But it sure is 'brown'.
