When to transplant?

When should I transplant my tomatoes and jalapeno seedlings?

Tomatoes status: about 3-4 inches tall, many true leaves are formed, bout 5-6.

Jalapeno: 2-3 inches tall. No true leaves

Where do you live? What are your current weather conditions? Sunny? Rainy?

How long is your growing season?

For example, people where I live have had tomatoes in the ground for anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. OTOH, folks in the Frozen North may only *now* be able to work the soil.

Six to eight inches is a good minimum size for putting them in the ground. At that point they are large enough to deep plant. Unfortunately they are also tender enough that slugs, and in my case chipmunks/mice love to eat them.

I live in New Jersey, the weather is topsy turvy, has been really rainy lately but has been clearing up. Sometimes it can be uber sunny but it can get uber rainy too...
