Romaine Lettuce.... Is it ready?

My first time to grow a garden....When and how do you pick Romaine Lettuce? Mine is about 12-15 inches tall and I am not sure if it is time to pull it and if I should pull it up from the root or cut it near the base. From what I understand, each plant will only produce once, but I'm still not sure the best way to harvest it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like they are ready to harvest! You can pull them and chop the roots, or chop them off at the base while still in the ground. They won't regrow so it doesn't really matter how you do it. Lettuce can be harvested at anytime before it bolts (goes to seed). My favorite lettuce to harvest is when they just start to form heads, and I will pick a few of these tender yet small plants and let the rest get a little bigger.

If you just snip off what you need and take the taller pieces, the lettuce should continue to produce and you will extend your harvest.
