Are these onions or potatoes or something else?

I was digging up my garden bed to plant new veggies when I found a ton of these (image below).

I decided to replant them and see what happens. I think they're potatoes or onions, but I could be wrong.. anyone know?

If it is an onion, it will smell like an onion.

Cut one open. If it is layered, its an onion.

pretty sure it's potatoes. at least that's what my sign says in that section of the garden now
