Few experiments - Tomatoes and Peppers

Few experiments I wanted to share, nothing earth shattering, but for first time "backyard gardener" (myself), I found it rather amusing watching something come out of practically nothing...

Experiment 1:

About 3 weeks ago, it was a nice day, we had dinner outside, grilled some salmon, as a garnish, we had some veggies, among which - very very sweet orange bell pepper (store bought) and the best store bought tomato I can find locally, little larger than cherry "Campari"

I decided to save few seeds from that orange "Mystery Pepper" and "Campari" tomatoes. Planted 4 fresh seeds of each into a little peat pods, not expecting anything.

Next thing I knew, all sprouted! Once first set of true leafs came out, I replanted them into plastic cups. So here are 3 weeks old little plants:

Experiment 2

This coming weekend I will transplant all of my cukes and tomatoes to the garden, weather should be in the 70's and overcast. So on Sunday, I trimmed off few lower branches from some of the mature tomato plants. Read somewhere while back, that trimmed off branches will grow roots if placed in the water for few days. So I did...

To my amusement, yesterday I noticed that little buggers have grown roots... Not even sure what varieties these are

First one:

Now transplanted into a cup:

Very nice pictures! Nature is indeed amazing...I also saved some orange bell pepper seeds, I'm anxious to see what the plants will amount to.

Hey D- hope you don't mind me shortening your name.

I too bought a yellow capsicum pepper from the supermarket and planted some of the seeds into a dish and placed on my window sill. These seeds were planted about 14 days ago and I now have 8 little plants about 2cm in height growing. I was so amazed and pleased and excited. I can't wait to watch them grow into lovely big plants yealding lots of orange peppers. :D

a lot of those way-sweet bell peppers are f1 hybrids, and won't be true to seed, but they may be good all the same. good experiments.

Hello all!

Since I was not expecting anything at all, it is just a fun experiment for me. And if these tomatoes and peppers produce any "usable" fruit - that would indeed be a bonus :D And if those fruit taste good - double bonus!

Cheers Pebbles! Good luck with your peppers, please, do share your progress with us!

Regards,
D

Love it! Fabulous pictures. I'll be picking up a few extra items from the store today!

Did you guys just use regular potting soil?

Hi Michelle

I used Organic Compost but I have also used normal compost. I am no expert but maybe you could mix a little soil and compost together.
