Queen Broccoli

I have about 20 broccoli plants going, the ones I raised from seed, but the picture below has a little story. One day in early March, I was out there cultivating around my tiny broccoli plants, and my son walks over from the compost heap carrying a green thing...."Mom", says he "I think this broccoli stalk has taken root!"...upon examination of the roughly 4 inch long stalk that hadn't gotten chopped up when added to the pile, I found that he was right! Little roots were all along the bottom of the stalk. :D Well, never having faced this exact situation before, I did what any true gardener would do: I planted the son-of-a-gun!

....And that little 4 inch stalk is now my Queen Broccoli, and as you can see from the pic, actually forming heads!

So now, of course, I'm purposely NOT chopping my stalks before adding them in, and in fact, am placing them along the sides of my compost, just hoping for more.

Here she is:

I had the same thing happen with brussel sprouts. Pretty cool!
