Onion plants/How low do you go

This might be a dumb question and know that this is all new to me but when planting an onion plant do you plant just deep enough to get small bulb under ground and leave all green above?

You got it right. Plant all of the roots and white portion of the stem underground and the green above ground.
Gardening at 5000 feet elevation, zone 4/5 Northern Utah, Frost free from May 25 to September 8 +/-

Do I cut any of the green back on the onion or leave as is? Thanks!
