Bell Pepper Seedlings

Hello,

Ive got a quick question for you all.

I recently started some bell pepper seeds in some coir, my seedlings are about 2 inches tall. Just a few days ago the 1st set of leaves started turning purple, then began fading to yellow. Here's a pic, I was hoping someone here could give me a diagnosis of the problem. Id really appreciate it.

midnightbloom,

There may be nothing wrong with your Peppers at all. There is a term 'seed leaves' or more properly cotyledons, which are the first leaves that emerge as a seedling throws off its seed coat. They sometimes, depending on species, only last a few days before beginning to fade away. I'm sorry to say that I can't recall the precise timing with Peppers. Perhaps someone else has paid more attention will see this.

I had the same thing happen to my seedlings last year. I think it was the light spectrum they were growing under. I had them under a "gro lite" instead of just a straight florescent. I'm going to do straight florescent this year and hope they fare better. They should be okay, and as soon as they get light from the sun they'll grow up just fine (and green, not purple!).

They're growing under a little CFL in my room which is around 70.

Just wondered if the temperature was too low but that is fine. One of my failings when reading questions is not to see the obvious and assume people know tha basics.
I would therefore agree with Norm and what you are looking at is the seed leaves which indeed will yellow and drop of or just shrivel. Can't say I have ever seen my bell pepper seed leaves turning purple though.
Thanks Norm and good luck with the peppers midnightbloom.
