Do I have to use Shallot sets or can I buy Shallots at the grocery store and plant them?

Based on my own experience with onions, shallots, potatoes and the like sprouting sometimes in my kitchen before I use them, I'd say give it a try.
The downside is that, unlike "starter" or "seed" onion, shallots, etc., we don't know for a fact that the grocery-store ones are disease-free.
