Is growing herbs and vegetables on pots possible?

Hi! I'm really new in gardening. I have always been interested in planting herbs and vegetables. The thing is I don't have a garden as I live in a building :( Can you suggest herbs and vegetables that would grow on pots?
Thanks in advance!

This style of gardening is "container gardening." I have a couple of books on it, which I'd recommend as starting points.

Sunset's Container Gardening, periodically updated and reprinted. Good as a general guide on placement of containers, watering, grouping, and so on.

The Bountiful Container, by Stuckee & McGee, published within the last year or two. Lists vegetables, herbs, and some fruit suitable for container growing, with cautions about unsuitable cultivars and the specific culture/care needed for each plant in a container.

If you use potting soil and other prepared media (compost?), one of the happiest aspects of container gardening is the lack of weeding! :D
