? about asparagas

For those who grow asparagas: how tall do the plants go when they fern out?

I'm planning a periennel bed for next year and wonder where I should place them so that I can pick the shoots but still leave room for the ferns.

The answer is definitely yes, leave room for the ferns. They are the necessary part of the plant to develop future spears. You might want to contact your local university extension and get a brochure or a Master Gardener to help you with the space planning and planting procedure. By the way, my asparagus grows a good 6 feet tall. It is the Jersey Knight brand. Good Luck. Don
