Garden yesterday

6C with showers.
Topped Brussels sprouts. Harvested 1 leek and a handful of cilantro.
I need to do much weeding but too stiff, tired, cold. Maybe tomorrow.

If nothing happened and that is good news,

. . then, as news goes,

that is probably the best news!

digitS' ;) who experienced a 2024 harvest with zero leeks for something like the first time in 15-20 years

digitS', Sorry about your leeks. Did they fail to germinate, struggle to grow, or what? I've seen people claim they never plant leeks, just let them self-seed. Mine don't; maybe weather rots the seeds before they can fall. Did you have other veggies that grew well/normally?

It was because I "downsized," VanIsle.

The distant, big veggie garden shrunk about ⅓rd in 2020 to 6,000 feet because selling at a farmers' market came to an end. The property owner passed away a couple years ago and the widow decided to sell and move into assisted living.

So in 2024, we stayed in our own backyard and expanded that tiny garden to 700 sq ft. Plans for '25 includes expanding it a tiny bit further. The peppers are still alive in a single row in the unheated 160 sqft greenhouse — something to be thankful for ;).

Steve, I didn't know you were used to having such a huge "garden." - now all the way down to 700sf; are you enjoying working with that? Must feel a lot more personal! You can talk to each cabbage individually :). The 160sf greenhouse should be helpful - that would be a very huge luxury for me.

I'm okay with it, VanIsle.

Health concerns meant that continuing at the market had to end in 2020 and we feel no need to return to that. For many seasons, we started early with plant sales and stayed as late in the marketing season as we could with fresh vegetables and flowers. It was good and there are fond memories of those times ;).

Yes, the 160 sqft greenhouse is larger than needed. It would be possible to go back to production of plant starts for sale. Been there, done that. However, the farmers' market doesn't really git goin' until there are vegetable AND fruit for sale and its starting date isn't very early. In other words, it's not the best sales location for plants for transplanting out in neighborhood yards.

Seasons change :).
