Cutworms killing my Mache/Corn Salad

For a few weeks now, I've been losing a Mache plant every day. I've only found one cutworm but I have seen holes in the soil like cutworms make. I've dug in those places hoping to find one and one is all I've found.
I don't know how to make a physical barrier that will work. Anyone have an idea?

Toothpicks or bamboo skewers on either side of the plant stem -- prevents cutworm from completely curling around the stem.

Or put a little collar around each plant:

little dixie cups with the bottom cut out or index cards stapled in a circle or anything else like that. Just needs to be an inch or two above and below ground.

Now this is a good idea for this situation. Going to try it. I'll let you know how it works.
Thanks.

Good thing I'm not in your garden. I'd eat that quicker than a cutworm could get to it. :)
