I've begun finding some bright red beetles in my garden, and can't determine whether or not they are pests. They resemble ladybugs somewhat - they are solid red, no markings, a couple millimeters smaller than ladybugs, but the same shape. I could find no match here:

I'll try to get a photo when I can, in the meantime I'm curious if anyone has ideas.
There are a number of pests that resemble lady bugs but as it so happens there are more than one species of lady bug too. Including one without spots.

Could this be your bright red beetle? The head of this beetle is very different from a lady bug.

Not terribly numerous - I suspect I asked this question prematurely. I'm a bit paranoid this year as it is only my second year of gardening and I am experiencing some new problems.
I'm also trying to not repeat mistakes. Late last summer, my cucumbers were getting eaten. I thought I found the culprit, and dutifully started squashing them. Then I identified the suspect as ladybug larvae, likely taking care of an (unknown) aphid infestation.
Thank goodness I didn't manage to get them all before discovering my error!!
