Help identify this insect

I found this guy on my cucumber plant. I didn't want to spray him with NEEM oil because I wasn't sure if he was beneficial or not. Can anyone identify him for me please :?:

Looks like a bee to meee. If the abdomen is yellow it may be an Italian, If black and white a caucasian or any of a number of other hybrid like Buckmaster or or.

Thank you, Richard. I thought it looked like a bee also but was afraid it may be a moth. I did a little research and found it may be a carpenter bee which are found in CA. The article was a few years old so since then it has made it's way to HI.

It is a carpenter bee drone. The females are black.

Thank you! I'm so glad I decided to do a little research before I killed it.
