What's growing on my plant?

I notice my plant is sick. When I took a closer look, I notice half brown/black dots growing on it. They're easy to remove. I can wipe them of with my fingers but they are many of them. They don't look like insects since they don't have legs. I'm worry about them taking over my plant. Can someone please ID this disease? What's the cure for it?

I live in Los Angeles. This plant is green year around.

Thanks

I believe what you have are scale insects. They are insects although they just look like little bumps on the tree/ plant. They are plant parasities, sucking juices from your plant, so are not good for it.

There are different varieties of scale insects, some more hard shelled than others. The hard shelled ones are particularly difficult to deal with, since armored from any sprays.

A technique used by one of the moderators here, Kisal, is to touch each one individually with a Qtip soaked in rubbing alcohol. You don't want to spray your plant with rubbing alcohol, which would be very damaging to it. Just touch the insects with it. She says it is very effective.
