Location: TN. 50 years of gardening experience.

Seguaro is a high elevation cold weather cactus. It grows very well between 2500 and 4000 ft elevation between Phoenix AZ and Flagstaff AZ also Tucson AZ where they get, rain, snow, ice, wind, blizzards. Roots get very long in search of water down deep in rock cracks and gravel. Purple might be an indication the plant is getting too much sun setting in the window. Cactus does very well with 5 hours of early morning sun the coolest part of the day.

Seguaro cactus you see growing in town in Phoenix area are transplants out of there natural habitat. They don't do as well in hot dry desert but they survive because most people have irrigation.
