Help me root my aloe!

Long story.. but the jist is, my husband broke the bottom leaves of my near 7 year old aloe, so I cut the roots and harvested the leaves.
I set him in a pot of soil with partial sunlight, and am hoping for the best.

I also removed the babies at that time, and set them in size appropriate pots at my window for light.

Haven't watered any of them yet.

Advice anyone? I really would like to keep my large lovely aloe from dying. I'm super sad.
Did I do the right things?

I cut aloes all the time. They root very fast and I did not have one rot. I would leave it without watering for one week and then water it. You want to cut to heal otherwise it will rot. The pops should take off fast.

My old aloe though; do I treat him the same way? Will an aloe that old root??
I'm just overly worried about him..

Would digging him up to check the progress then planting him again cause any negative effects?

I took aloe out if trash and they are growing no problem. I am in Cali so everything succulent related grows here fantastic, but still. To me aloes are one of the easiest plants to grow. I have a lot of different types.
