Why aloes turn red sometimes

My sister's aloe sometimes turns red. Does anyone know why?

Aloes can turn red from being where the sun is very hot or if they are grown in poor soil.

Thanks I think that the sun is why.

The aloe vera I grow at home rarely turns red, but the one grown at Urban Garden where I volunteer is smaller and does turn red in summer. The difference seems to be both sun and soil. I have giant aloe at home that gets lots of nutrients and I am at a higher elevation. When I took some of my plants to the other garden which is 17 ft above sea level and 5-14 degrees hotter, the plants shrank after a few months in the poorer soil (more alkaline and has a lot less nitrogen), and in the summer it also turns slightly red.

It can also be a result of cultivar. The aloes that were already growing in the garden had reddish flowers, mine are more yellow even though the plants look almost alike otherwise. During the cooler months the aloes lose the reddish tinge.
