Dying Aloe Vera! D'=

I recently was given an Aloe Vera cutting but it is dying..
The leaves are really thin, brown and droopy. I thought I was under watering it so I gave it water but it does not seem to help! I also found out the lady that gave it me did not use cactus soil so I have re-potted it but I think I am doing something wrong.

Please help me bring it back to life!

When you first plant aloe vera from a cutting it does get yellow until the roots develop. Don't over water or it will rot. The new shoots should come out fine.

Is there a large hole in the bottom of the pot?

Personally, I would change the pot that it is in. It looks like a smooth, glazed one. Aloes and Cacti don't normally do well in smooth pots because, they retain too much water. They don't allow the soil to drain enough and therefore keep the roots wet. Aloes and Cacti suffer if their roots stay wet. The best kind of pot for them is an unglazed, clay pot. Something like this Image would be ideal.

It also helps to have a regular watering plan for the plant.
