Lithops (Living Stone) query

I have a living stone, and have had it for many years now. However, As far as I'm aware they are supposed to grow and spread over a pot (hence why they should be kept in shallow dish containers).

My problem: my lithops has never spread!

It flowers freely every year and new 'leaves' grow up from inside. However, only 1 pair of 'leaves' is ever present.

I water it by giving it a thorough soaking and letting it dry out (advice from the houseplant expert book). I water it less in winter, if at all.

What am I missing here? Can anyone shed any light on my my lithops does not spread and grow?

Some varieties clump (spread) and some don't. If yours is healthy enough to flower and produce new leaves as the old pair dies then your's doesn't spread.
