Cactus Terrarium in Large Fishbowl - Please Help
Posted: Thu Feb 16, 2012 7:14 pm
To my surprise, Mom gave me a cactus terrarium last month for my 30th birthday. My first thought was "really? a milestone birthday and I get a cactus garden?!?!" followed shortly by "what am I going to do with this?". I don't have ANY indoor plants...Toby, the younger rat terrier, feels the need to 'own' anything that belongs outside that has been brought indoors. He even ate the leaves off my jade plant (which was on a table)! It is now safe at work...
Back to the terrarium
it is in a large fishbowl looking thing made completely of glass. Not circlular, but square with rounded corners. I am perplexed that there aren't drain holes. I have no idea the species of cactus...there is a large round one with long prickly things, a small round one that is similar, thereis this spongy looking green thing, then there's these yellow-green leave things and a set of pink ones. Looked at some photos online and I still have no idea. Looks like bottom of glass jar has some sand, then some soil, then more sand (1-2 cm). I don't know how to load a photo to show you.
Mom said the cactus would like the dry air in my house (I don't think the air is dry..we have humidifier running on furnace). AND the care instructions she gave from wherever she had this made just said to 'give it a little spritz every blue moon'. I haven't even had it a month and it looks like the pink thing is dying. I gave it a few sprays of water yesterday and then again today because it looked worse. I water my jade plant once a month so I figured the cactus would be about the same. I can't touch soil with finger as jar is deep and I am not adventurous.
I would like to attempt to keep alive...please help!
Thanks, Beth
