cactus shock

My shock too! Huge christmas cactus-type (see below) fell and pot broke. I have repotted it but not watered or anything, and put it back in similar exposure where It's done so well for maybe 10 years now. But I'm not sure how to help it get healthy again since it lost a lot of fronds and I'm sure is very unhappy right nowl

This plant grew from a cup-sized cutting into a plant maybe 24-30" across.
It has elongated "paddles" (not sure what to call them) and when it blooms
those are about 3-4" long. I couldn't find a Google image but it is very similar to a CC. Paddles grow into leaf shape which is thin and the plant droops about 2' from the pot. I appreciate any help, advice, sympathy. Thanks.

Did you mean to post a picture? If so, you may find it helpful to read our Webmaster's tips at How to Post Pictures & Photos on Forums

I gather from your post that your plant was not a holiday cactus, but something similar. Is that right?

I'm sorry your plant was injured. You do have my sympathy. :(

Since I'm not sure what kind of plant it was, I can't advise on what you might need to do to help it recover. I'll watch this thread and post again if you post a picture. :)

Welcome to the forum! :)

I have two of those at home.

I think they are called night orchids. They are quite rare and are very easy to start from a leaf cutting.

From the looks of it, yours seems fine. As long as the plant isn't limp or has a lot o f yello leaves. Treat it like you always do to not disturb it.

If you are really worried, you can take a cutting just in case and start a new plant. But, I'm pretty sure your's will survive.

One of mine fell on a harwood floor at a height of about 3-4 feet. The pot didn't brake and my plant is still fine.

They may be Epiphyllum, which have huge brightly coloured flowers that look as though made out of tissue paper. Also related are the Queen of the Night, which bloom only for one night, and the perfume will chase you out of the house! There are many generic crosses with various other types of plants, with the consequence that you can never unravel the genetics.

These are tough plants - I worked in a nursery where they raised different hybrids, and they used to have little tiny hanging baskets - 6" size, filled with these huge ugly long dangly things which got totally over balanced. I used to brutally prune them to get them back into being level so you could at least water them without getting dowsed.

Blue fox, I have seen those in B.C., but not here in Alberta. But they are beautiful when in full bloom. Lots of different colours if I remember correctly..... I think the one that dropped should hopefully be OK, if it isn't disturbed too much. Does look sad though. Poor thing. Keep us informed as to how it does? Will be interesting to know.

Thank you, cactus people!! '-D from Taos, NM.

It has grown wonderfully while being ignored, so I guess I will just continue to ignore it and it will be fine. I appreciate the moral support!
