Can anyone tell me why my Christmas Cactus is turning purple. We have had it for 5 years and this is the first time it has happened.

It's receiving too much intense light where you have it located. Move it to a place where it only gets bright light, and little or no direct sunlight. You could also try moving it back from the glass a little.
Holiday cacti are not desert cacti. Instead, they grow in the trees in jungles. More than a few hours of direct sunlight will be too much for them. In their native environment, the roots grow in bits of loose bark and other debris, so excellent drainage is a must, as well. They are succulents, so too much water will lead to root rot.
