How to grow cactus from cutting?

Hello everyone,

A few days ago, at the green house where I work, I received a very long stem cutting from a cactus that fell. The cutting is probably one feet or two tall. I left the end dry up since Friday night at my house.

Now, what should I do now? Can I simply plant the cutting in soil and water it? I have done that to other cactus cuttings and it has been a success.

That's what I would do. I might hold off on watering for a week or 2 or 3, however, since most cacti are moving into dormancy now. Also, without roots, cacti can't really handle much water ... in fact, no plant can. :)

Mix about 20% child play sand with potting soil. Plant about 1/3 of your cactus in that soil in a well drained pot. Water it every day and it will sprout roots in 2 weeks. Keep watering it every day and it will grow fine.

3 years ago the cactus in this picture was just 1 broken piece about 6" long from 2 different cactus. Cuttings grow made more cactus. Cactus grows fast about 3 ft per year and if you fertilize it with low nitrogen fertilizer like 6/12/12 it will make new growth over night.
