Hens and Chicks -- offspring from a leaf?

I think I read on another topic -- that I may have to let the end of the leaf callous (sp?) before planting it to make new plants?

My mom gave me 2 of these and when transplanting some of the leaves fell off -- and well.. I really like like these little buggers and wanted to take the opportunity to multiply if I could.

Thanks,

Silvia

My 'rule of thumb' regarding whether to let a cutting from a succulent callus over is how 'juicy' the cut end seems. If it's quite wet looking, I give it time to dry. If it doesn't look wet, then I just go ahead and plant it. In my experience, leaf cuttings don't need to dry before they're planted, but check the cut end that will be going in the soil. :)

Does this work with an Aloe Vera?

I've tried it, it's only been in the pot about 3 days, obviously it needs to be in for longer, how much longer do you think before something happens? And will more leaves grow with that leaf or will it just send out pups first?

thanks

M
