Potting aloe vera pups

I just removed a bunch of pups from my aloe vera so I could grow new aloes but unfortunately one of them had absolutely no roots. I read on a website if this happens just let it callus then dress it with top soil to stand it up they also said not to water it or it could start rotting. I did all of this but do I put it by a window to get some sun? Also how often do I check for roots?
Thanks!

Bright light, no direct sun.

Some say to gently tug on the plant, and if it doesn't come up, you know it has roots. I never do that. I just wait for new top growth to appear. If you use too large a pot, it will take longer to start to show new top growth. For pups from cacti and succulents, I use the smallest pots I have, which range from 1 1/2 to 3 inches in diameter measured across the top.
