Soil fungus?

I have a san pedro that is not growing much this year and once I dug down all this grey chalk started coming up.

Is this a soil fungus & if so does anyone know what kind?

Do you think I could save the cactus or is my best bet just to cut it an repot?

Back in the days when I first began growing cacti, I would occasionally find deposits similar to that in the soil. I was told it was mineral salts, either from the water, or from fertilizers.

There are some soil fungi associated with cacti, but I've never seen them in real life. I use a very sandy potting mix for my cacti, and I keep them pretty dry. Here is a page that describes some of the fungi that can afflict cacti:

I was taught that the soil should be thoroughly dry, before cacti are repotted.
