please help ID

Hello all, I am new to bonsai as well as the forum. My mother had recently taken over care of my fathers bonsai tree that was gifted to him approximately a year ago. As is her norm, the tree is not in great health. I have tried to use online guides to get tree ID'd, but have been unsuccessful. Any help in the matter would be greatly appreciated, as I would hate to see the tree die.

Its' a ficus. The wires can probably come off. You don't want to leave it on so long that it cuts into the tree. It has lost its' leaves so I take it, that it was moved from another location. Ficus will do that, they don't like being moved. Once it aclimates the leaves will grow back. It has a decent shape, but the soil looks like it is full of roots and it needs to be re-potted.
I suggest you join a local bonsai society and bring your tree. They will know what media to use and how to trim the roots. They will also give you advice on how to care for the tree. Check out the bonsai tutorial section, especially how to check when you need to water and make sure the plant never stands in a pool of water.

Thank you so much for the info! I'll do my best to find a local group
