The tree didn't come with anything to say what species it is.

Yes, it looks like a Chinese Elm to me. From what I can tell of the soil it looks like you will need to work to get it properly saturated and then be careful not to water again too soon. Such a dense medium is challenging, begin to research a proper bonsai soil, it is unlike conventional potting soil.
