I picked this up cheap, a couple months ago, and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what it is. Also, can I split the separate trunks?

Looks like a Pony Tail Palm to me. They like the sun. Water when the soil feels dry.

+1 Ponytail Palm. Really not a bonsai since styling is not a possibility. No, I would not split the "trunks".
