I think Norm is probably much closer with his assessment of some kind of Thuja. Here's a pic that I'll be including in my upcoming 'Budget Bonsai' posting.

In the center is a Thuja Occidentalis "Little Giant'. If you look in the lower right corner you can see the top of a Bald Cypress. The leaf (frond?) structure on your trees seems to bear more resemblance to the Thuja than the Cypress. Although they're, obviously, pretty closely related. Hope this helps a little.

Derek,
I'm relatively new to the Cupressaceae Family which includes the Genus Cupressus from which we see Species such as Mediterranean Cypress or Cupressus sempervirens.

The Cupressaceae Family also includes the Genus Taxodium which includes your Bald Cypress or Taxodium distichum.

All of this is a round about way of saying that the fact that your Bald Cypress does not resemble the photos that guilhermecahu posted earlier does not preclude his tree from being a Cypress. You could have very well been correct in your earlier assessment.
By way of comparison here is Eastern Arborvitae or Thuja occidentalis.

All three are in the Cupressaceae Family but all are in differing Genera.
Norm
P.S.
Have you seen my thread about collecting an Arborvitae? Tachigi was not exactly enthusiastic concerning the artistic potential of this species. Keep an eye on that thread I hope to be digging soon.

It's kind of ironic that you would say that as I am beginning to feel that you were correct initially when you said Cypress.I think Norm is probably much closer with his assessment of some kind of Thuja.
