Hi, I have received 2 bonsais as birthday gifts last September.
Can you please help me identify the type of bonsais they are?

Moreover I seem to be having some problems with the big one.... Alot of leaves started falling and today I have a branch which looks dead. Other branches have new leaves ... what could have been the cause of this? Shall I remove it completely?

Moreover the soil seem to be having white powdery substance. I use rain water and not tap water. Conditions in Malta are quite damp and I do not have a watering plan ... just touch the soil and if its starting to dry out give I wet it again. I keep it indoors but has alot of light.

The bottom one is a Schefflera and I'd just snip off the dead branch. It looks like it will not regenerate for you.
Are the two top pictures of the same tree? The foliage on the top picture looks like Sageretia Theezen but in the second picture it does look more like a Ficus.
Can you take another picture from the side with better lighting and a nicely lit closeup of the leaves?

Do your leaves look like these? I'm hoping so because I have this tree and it is both beautiful and easy to care for.
Oh, and the white stuff on the potting medium looks (from here) to be a salt residue. A closer look would be better. On occasion salt deposits can be trapped in the potting soil and need to be flushed out. For this reason about once a month I put my trees in the sink and let the water run onto all parts of the soil and run out the drainage holes in the bottom.
This fresh, clean water acts to flush out any unwanted deposits and in a good medium will aerate the soil which these trees love.
If you have freely draining medium don't be afraid to let the water gently run through and out the bottom.
